The gas gauge called it quits while going to get gas. That now means that the $10 Volvo has no way to tell me when I should fill up. Oh well, more work for me to do on my project car.

Figure out how many miles you get to a tank and just set your trip meter to zero every time you fill up.

Pour in a bottle of Chevron Techroline Fuel System Treatment. This is a common thing on my generation of Corvette, and it works about 90% of the time.

That would be great, except the trip gauge is just as dead as the odo. I hink I mayhave to gt a new gauge cluster.

Pretty common problem on old Volvos. I've had to repair the gauge cluster on all three of my 740/940 cars. Turbobricks has a good write up about it here. I don't know if it applies to 850s, but they can't be that different.
The other major problem on 850s is the speedo gear breaks due to the cheap plastic becoming brittle with age, which also knocks out the odometer and trip odometer. IPD offers a decent replacement I would definitely look into if you're working on the gauge cluster anyways. It's a bitch to get them in and out, so do it right the first time.
Congrats on the car by the way. That's the deal of the century on an awesome car. I've been keeping my eye out for a good 850 turbo wagon in my area for cheap.
